十日町友禅
Pronunciation: Tokamachi-yuzen
Production area: Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture
Tokamachi, long known as a weaving center, began producing Yuzen dyeing in the 1950s by adopting techniques from Kyoto-yuzen. Compared to the more traditional Yuzen styles of Kyoto, Kaga, and Tokyo, Tokamachi-yuzen is relatively new and characterized by its younger artisans, who flexibly incorporate a wide range of techniques and create designs with a fresh sensibility. While Kyoto follows a division-of-labor system, with each process carried out by different specialists, Tokamachi’s manufacturers handle the entire production in-house—from weaving and dyeing to Shibori (tie-dyeing), Yuzen, embroidery, and gold leaf decoration. Today, Tokamachi stands alongside Kyoto as one of Japan’s leading Yuzen production centers.
