Tokorozawa-kasuri / Saitama

所沢絣

Pronunciation: Tokorozawa-kasuri
Production area: Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture

Tokorozawa-kasuri is a cotton kasuri (ikat textile) historically produced across the Sayama Hills, from Musashimurayama to western Tokorozawa. Originating in the Edo period as “Murayama-kasuri,” it developed into a regional specialty. Because the Tokorozawa market became the distribution hub for these cotton kasuri textiles, they came to be known as Tokorozawa-kasuri (Hibaku). Production flourished until the early Shōwa period, when Tokorozawa thrived as a textile town. Worn as everyday clothing and workwear by common people, Tokorozawa-kasuri was known for its practicality and rustic charm. However, demand declined from the Taishō era onward, leading to its disappearance. Today, revival efforts are underway through the Tokorozawa Hibaku Study Group, which is working to reproduce the weaving and dyeing methods.
