丹波木綿
Pronunciation: Tamba-momen
Production area: Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture
Tamba-momen is a handwoven cotton textile produced in the Kurikara district of Tamba-Sasayama. Using traditional techniques passed down locally and materials sourced from the region, it is woven carefully one by one. Characterized by indigo-dyed stripes and kasuri (ikat) patterns, Tamba-momen differs from Tanbanuno in that it is woven entirely from cotton yarn. It is said that high-quality cotton was already being cultivated and woven into textiles during the Hoei era (1704–1710). Although handweaving declined with mechanization in the mid-Meiji period, Tamba-momen was revived in 1973 using traditional methods of hand-spinning, plant dyeing, and handweaving. For nearly 300 years, Tamba-momen has been cherished in daily life, nurtured by the natural environment and way of life in Kurikara. With its balance of utility and beauty, it remains a beloved household textile. In 1996, it was officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Hyogo Prefecture.
