南部紫根染

Pronunciation: Nambu Shikon-zome
Production area: Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture

Nambu Shikon-zome is a traditional plant-dyeing technique handed down in the Nambu region of Iwate Prefecture. It uses the roots of the purple gromwell plant (shikon), which are crushed, filtered, and pressed to extract pigment. Through repeated dyeing, a deep reddish-purple color is achieved. Also known as “Iwate Murasaki,” this elegant and noble hue has been valued since the Asuka and Kamakura periods, used for court attire. In addition to traditional patterns such as Om masu, Ko masu, and Tatewaku, more than 800 original motifs have been created. The craft is admired for its warmth born of handwork, as well as the unique beauty of its colors that deepen in character with age.
