南部古代型染
Pronunciation: Nambu Kodai Katazome
Production area: Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture
Nambu Kodai Katazome traces its origins to the Edo period, when it was used to dye samurai attire such as Kamishimo, Hakama, and Kosode. More than 130 traditional motifs remain, including the Nambu clan crest Mukaitsuru, Senba-chidori (a thousand plovers), and Nambu Hagi (bush clover). Every step—from stencil cutting to dyeing and finishing—is done by hand. The vivid indigo tones achieved through traditional fermentation methods using sukumo indigo, wheat bran, and wood ash give the dyeing its unique dynamism. The striking contrasts of patterns against the indigo background are considered a hallmark of its beauty.
