n this fifth edition, I visit Kodaiji Jugyuan, a Michelin one-star ryotei where traditional Kyoto kaiseki cuisine is served in an elegant setting. Dressed in kimono, we enjoyed refined hospitality, exquisite dishes, and views that capture the essence of Kyoto.

Kodaiji Temple was founded by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to honor his memory. Located near Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine, it stands in one of Kyoto’s most visited areas. Within its precincts lies Kodaiji Jugyuan, a Michelin-starred ryotei. On its spacious grounds of about 6,600 square meters, a sukiya-style building overlooks a garden that changes beautifully with the seasons, offering a serene environment in which to enjoy Kyoto cuisine rooted in history and tradition.
From the moment you pass through the gate, the refined welcome creates a sense of anticipation. The stone steps leading to the entrance invite you to pause and admire the natural beauty.

My room was a private space with a stunning view of Yasaka Pagoda rising in the distance, framed by Kyoto’s cityscape and surrounding mountains. On clear days, the scenery looks like a living painting. Kodaiji Jugyuan offers both private rooms and counter seating, where guests can experience the atmosphere of the kitchen firsthand.

Kodaiji Jugyuan is the first Japanese ryotei by the Hiramatsu Group, known for its restaurants and hotels across Japan. Each dish reflects a deep respect for seasonal ingredients, prepared with care and presented with elegance. Every plate delights with taste, aroma, and artistry, like precious jewels on the table.

When I visited in March, the appetizers celebrated Hinamatsuri (the Doll’s Festival), beautifully arranged to reflect the season.

The final course of rice featured sakura shrimp, fragrant and rich, offering a perfect finale to the meal. From start to finish, the culinary journey was a feast for the senses, enhanced by gracious service.

Kodaiji Jugyuan offers a rare experience where world-renowned Japanese cuisine meets Hiramatsu’s refined sensibility. Here, guests can savor exceptional flavors in a space that embodies history, beauty, and harmony. It is a place where dining becomes a lasting memory, steeped in the spirit of Kyoto’s timeless heritage.
