Kurayoshi-kasuri / Tottori

倉吉絣

Pronunciation: Kurayoshi-kasuri
Production area: Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture

Kurayoshi-kasuri is a Kasuri fabric woven in Kurayoshi City, distinguished by its intricate patterns depicting motifs such as hemp leaves, tortoiseshell, landscapes, pines, and cranes—designs so elaborate they resemble woven paintings. About 200 years ago, weaver Inashima Daisuke popularized e-gasuri (pictorial Kasuri) in the style of flower, bird, and landscape motifs. Influenced by Yumehama-kasuri and Kurume-kasuri of Fukuoka, production began in the late Edo period and flourished during the Meiji era. Kurayoshi-kasuri even gained international acclaim, winning awards at World Expositions. Today, its beauty continues to captivate artisans who devote themselves to mastering the techniques. Each thread is carefully prepared and woven by hand, ensuring the tradition is preserved for future generations.
