Kimono Travel Journal Vol.2 “Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel(Tunnel of Light)” | Niigata

In this second edition, I entered the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel(Tunnel of Light) in kimono, a stunning art space where the grandeur of nature meets architectural design.

Located in Tokamachi, Niigata, Kiyotsu Gorge is one of Japan’s most celebrated scenic spots. Millions of years ago, this land was once the seabed, where volcanic ash and magma created layers of green tuff. Solidified magma formed striking columnar joints, later carved by the river into a dramatic V-shaped gorge with emerald streams flowing below.

he result is a breathtaking natural landscape with origins dating back 16 million years. In 2018, the gorge became home to a new art destination when MAD Architects transformed the 750-meter tunnel into the “Tunnel of Light.”

Inspired by a submarine, the tunnel features three viewing points acting as periscopes, and a grand Panorama Station at the end. Elements of wood, earth, metal, fire, and water are woven into the design, creating a blend of nature and artistry.

Inside, each viewing spot reveals a unique play of light. The shifting atmosphere can feel cinematic, almost suspenseful. I noticed my kimono hem brushing swiftly against the floor, the sound echoing in the tunnel like part of the performance.

The second viewing point, “Flow,” is covered in black-and-white stripes that merge geometric patterns with the vitality of nature.

Further along, the third point, “Drop,” uses convex mirrors set against curved walls to represent water molecules. Reflections ripple with light, creating a rhythmic dance of motion.

At the end lies the celebrated “Light Cave.” Here, a semi-mirrored tunnel finished in stainless steel opens to a water basin that reflects the gorge upside down. The illusion is otherworldly, blending nature and reflection into a single vista.

Although the tunnel slopes gently upward, the paved walkway makes it easy to walk even in zori sandals. Each season paints the gorge with a different beauty—from lush greens to fiery autumn leaves and snow. Visiting in kimono heightens the sense of timelessness, as if stepping into a dialogue between nature, art, and tradition.
