岐阜縮緬
Pronunciation: Gifu-chirimen
Production area: Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture
Gifu-chirimen refers to crepe fabrics woven in and around Gifu City, one of Japan’s major crepe-producing regions alongside Tango and Nagahama. Production flourished under the encouragement of the Ogaki clan. The technique of weaving chirimen was introduced from Kyoto to Gifu in 1722, and later expanded with the development of mon-chirimen (patterned crepe). Much of the fabric was shipped to Kyoto, where it was finished with Yuzen dyeing. Traditionally, Gifu-chirimen was woven from tama-ito (silk from double cocoons) into both plain and patterned crepes. Today, however, production has shifted from pure silk to rayon-based jinken chirimen, which continues to be manufactured in the region.
