Akita Une-ori | Akita

秋田畝織

Pronunciation: Akita Une-ori
Production area: Akita City, Akita Prefecture

Akita Une-ori is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Property of Akita Prefecture. It is a refined silk textile with a crisp texture and elegant sheen that exudes dignity and softness. Made from raw silk, it undergoes a special refining process to produce the distinctive white ridged fabric. Its uniqueness lies in the weaving structure that combines ribbed weft weaving, where vertical ridges appear, with plain weave. Traditionally used for men’s formal wear and haori linings, it later came to be woven as women’s kimono fabric. Although Akita is also known for Akita Hachijo, Akita Une-ori has a history that dates back more than 200 years earlier.
