Shiroishi Shifu | Miyagi

白石紙布

Pronunciation: Shiroishi Shifu
Production area: Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture

Shiroishi Shifu is a woven textile made from yarn twisted out of finely cut strips of traditional Japanese paper (washi). It is known for its durability, breathability, lightness, and soft texture. Shiroishi once flourished as a washi-producing area, and Shiroishi Shifu was said to have been crafted by samurai serving the Date domain and presented as tribute to the shogunate. The craft disappeared after the Meiji Restoration but was revived in the early Showa period through the research of Mr. Chutaro Sato, Mr. Nobumitsu Katakura, and Mr. Tadao Endo, who worked to restore the traditional techniques. Because Shifu retains the qualities of paper, it offers coolness in summer and warmth in winter.
