能登上布
Pronunciation: Noto Johfu
Production area: Nakanoto Town, Kashima District, Ishikawa Prefecture
Noto Johfu is a prestigious hemp textile produced in the Noto region. It is regarded alongside Echigo Johfu as one of Japan’s finest hemp fabrics, using hand-spun ramie threads with indigo dyeing and kasuri (ikat) patterns. Its origins date back to the Nara period, and records suggest it was presented to the Imperial Court as tribute in the Heian period. During the Edo period, it flourished under the patronage of the Kaga domain. Production begins with the cultivation of ramie, followed by hand-spinning of the fibers, and the creation of kasuri patterns using stencils or tied-resist methods. Finished bolts are exposed to the snow in the traditional yukizarashi (snow bleaching) process, resulting in a refreshing white ground with indigo kasuri designs.
