Nambu-tsumugi | Iwate

南部紬

Pronunciation: Nambu-tsumugi
Production area: Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture

Nambu-tsumugi is a traditional textile of Iwate Prefecture, characterized by its rustic, natural charm, soft fullness, and non-slippery texture. The dyeing materials are derived from plants such as walnuts, hazelnuts, and, more recently, purple gromwell roots. During the Edo period, it was promoted under the Morioka domain and widely woven in castle towns. After World War II, efforts were made to revive it as a local industry through authentic hand-loomed production. Today, its techniques continue to be preserved. A notable example is the white-ground Nambu-tsumugi woven by the weaving house “Hataya” in Ichinoseki, which was presented to the Emperor and Empress, as well as Prince Chichibu, in 1968. It also won the gold prize at the 1987 Iwate Industrial Festival Specialty Product Competition.
