Mikawa-momen is known for its distinctive vertical stripes called Mikawa-jima, as well as its durability, heat retention, and moisture absorption. Cotton cultivation and weaving flourished in the Mikawa region during the Edo period, and the textiles produced were sent to Edo. By the Meiji period, with the introduction of Western techniques, production advanced further. Under the names “Mikawa Cotton” and “Mikawa Stripes,” the textiles became widely recognized across Japan.
