Kimono Travel Journal Vol.4 “TENJIN / ROKU KYOTO, LXR HOTELS & RESORTS” | Kyoto

In this fourth edition, I visited TENJIN at ROKU KYOTO, LXR HOTELS & RESORTS in the Rakuhoku area, dressed in kimono. Surrounded by Kyoto’s quiet northern landscape, I savored French-inspired cuisine crafted with seasonal ingredients.

The Rakuhoku area, home to Shimogamo Shrine—one of Kyoto’s oldest shrines—is known for its serene natural beauty. This region, said to be the birthplace of the Rinpa school of art, has long been loved by artists.
Here, at the foot of the Takagamine mountains, ROKU KYOTO opened in 2021 as Hilton’s first LXR property in the Asia-Pacific.

On the first floor, TENJIN welcomes guests with refined French cuisine created from seasonal ingredients and local produce. The interior features art with a bamboo motif, offering a calm atmosphere. While window seats are pleasant, the terrace provides an open setting where nature unfolds before you.

Each dish highlights Kyoto’s seasonal flavors with playful artistry.
An appetizer I enjoyed was a salad of lightly smoked tuna with avocado and local vegetables, the subtle smokiness enhancing the creamy harmony.

For the seafood course, I chose scallops instead of Tango kuchi or Akou. The dish was lavishly topped with autumn truffles, their aroma filling the air. Even within the plump scallops, truffle was hidden, a clever touch.

Dessert was a compote of figs coated in white chocolate, styled as a Mont Blanc with white bean paste—a perfect blend of playfulness and elegance.

The bar also offers signature cocktails. I tried “Korin,” named after Ogata Korin, who perfected the Rinpa style in the Edo period. This cocktail, made with sake, matcha, yuzu, and a hint of wasanbon sugar, sparkled with generous layers of gold leaf, recalling Korin’s national treasure “Irises Folding Screen.”

Since ROKU KYOTO is located within the grounds of Shozan Resort, I visited in an Ichin-zome kimono, a dyeing technique that dates back to the Momoyama period. As I gazed upon the same Takagamine scenery once admired by artists and writers centuries ago, I felt deeply connected to their creative spirit.
Stepping away from central Kyoto, I found a place where history, nature, and fine dining converge—a serene journey best enjoyed in kimono.
