広瀬絣
Pronunciation: Hirose-kasuri
Production area: Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture
Hirose-kasuri is a pictorial Kasuri textile produced in Hirose, Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. It is distinguished by bold designs that combine pictorial and geometric motifs, created using a unique stencil technique in which patterns are enlarged lengthwise, cut into washi paper, and fixed with persimmon tannin. The origins of Hirose-kasuri date back to 1824, when Sadako Nagaoka, the wife of a local physician, learned the techniques of Yumihama-kasuri in Yonago and brought them back to her hometown, teaching them to local women. Since farmland was scarce, the Hirose domain of the Matsue clan encouraged kasuri weaving as a side occupation for farmers and townspeople. Many designs were created based on the drawings of the domain painter Tomonari Horie. Featuring patterns that resonate even with modern sensibilities, Hirose-kasuri fabrics are woven on high looms using kasuri threads to faithfully reproduce the intended motifs. The results are fresh yet rustic, with a natural charm born from handcraftsmanship. Alongside Yumihama-kasuri and Kurayoshi-kasuri, Hirose-kasuri is regarded as one of the representative kasuri textiles of the San’in region and is designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture.
