秦荘紬
Pronunciation: Hatasho-tsumugi
Production area: Hatasho, Shiga Prefecture
Hatasho-tsumugi is a handwoven textile produced in the Koto region of Shiga. The area has long been known for sericulture, with farmers spinning silk from cocoons to weave clothing for household use. Its hallmark is the incorporation of the kushi-oshi kasuri technique—originally used in Omi-jofu—into silk slub yarns (mawata-tsumugi ito). This results in a rustic folk-style tsumugi with distinctive ikat patterns. Hatasho-tsumugi is appreciated for its soft, voluminous texture that grows even more appealing with age, developing a unique character and beauty over time.
