Japan is home to many traditional crafts, and the techniques of weaving and dyeing have been carefully handed down to the present. However, the kimono industry is often described as a declining field, facing challenges such as the aging of artisans and a shortage of successors. As Japanese people, we believe this precious tradition must be preserved and shared with the future. To prevent kimono culture from fading away, we felt there should be an accessible platform on the internet where its essence and beauty can be freely shared. This idea gave birth to Kimono-en.

The name “En (苑)” carries symbolic meaning. The character is composed of “夗,” meaning “gentle curves,” combined with the grass radical, signifying a field where plants grow on softly undulating land. In this way, the flowing continuity of tradition is likened to gentle curves, while the grass represents people who love kimono. Together, the word reflects our wish for Kimono-en to become a place that revitalizes kimono culture.Additionally, en also implies “a place where arts gather,” while its pronunciation connects with the word “縁 (en),” meaning bond or connection. Thus, Kimono-en aspires to be a place where everyone involved in kimono—creators, merchants, and wearers—can be linked by fortunate ties.

To pass down Japan’s cultural heritage, we hope to deepen interest in kimono and inspire people to rediscover the joy of wearing it. In today’s uncertain and unpredictable times, kimono allows us to feel the “luxury of wearing craftsmanship” and the “luxury of wearing time.”
